Antique 18th Century classical Landscape With Ruins

Excellent quality late 18th/early 19th-century extensive river classical landscape with ruins and a Roman Campagna in the distance.

Probably painted by a very competent British artist in the Claude Lorrain style.
Italianate classical landscape paintings with ruins were a popular genre in European art during the 17th and 18th centuries. These paintings typically featured classical ruins set in idyllic landscapes, often with a focus on natural beauty and the passing of time.

Some notable examples of Italianate classical landscape paintings with ruins include:
Claude Lorrain’s “Landscape with Ruins” (1636): This painting depicts a pastoral landscape with ancient ruins in the foreground. The composition is balanced and serene, with a warm, golden light suffusing the scene.
Nicolas Poussin’s “Landscape with a Calm” (1650-51): In this painting, the ruins of a classical temple are visible on a hill in the background. The foreground is dominated by a tranquil river scene, with trees and foliage on either side.

The painting has been to our expert conservators, the painting has had a light clean small restore in the sky and the canvas has been fully relined. The frame has also been restored.
