LARGE CARVED WOODEN BOOK KNIFE WITH VOIVODA. P.I. SOMOV 1918. Made in the breathtaking spirit of Russian Art Nouveau and conveys the appearance of a thoughtful, daring governor. It is presented almost sculpturally, in three-quarters, with perky cowlicks on the hero’s helmet. The level of plastic work and artistic generalizations betray the hand of a skilled carver, if not a sculptor. Perhaps this is an abbreviation for an artel of carvers or a workshop.
