Item is in excellent condition with no visible damage.

    ITEM 1508 DESCRIPTION
An African female fertility figure (doll) attributed to the African Akan/Fante People of West Africa (Ghana) wearing a front-only breechcloth.

There are incised lines around the neck indicating rolls of fat; prosperity and beauty.

Her left hand is on her abdomen and her right arm is down at her side; her legs are slightly bent.

    She has an elaborate hairstyle.

There are tribal scarification marks on her entire body; front and back.

The head is an elongated shape.

The eyes are almond-shaped and slanted; the nose is slender at the bridge and very wide at the nostrils; the mouth is full.

The Ashanti and the Akan people are closely united ethnic groups; the Ashanti did not use scarification, the Akan people did.

The related Fante people made their Akua'ba figures with an elongated rectangle-shaped head.

The fertility figure (doll) is referred to as Akua'ba.

The Akan people believe that the figure should be treated like a living child.

Once the owner becomes a mother through birth, the figure is returned to the priest and added to the spirit's shrine as a thanks offering for the real child delivered.

The Akan shrine can feature 10 figures.

In some cases, the figure is kept by the family as an heirloom or given to the child as a toy.

    Circa late 20th century.

My name is Marco Carvalho and I am the Sole Trader of Carvalho ABC Limited, a business I established in September 2022. After having worked for a decade in the antique industry for another business, I have now decided to sell my own stock that I built up during that period and from a previously private collection. I specialise in reselling antiques, books, and collectable items. Within those categories, I have items listed such as Ancient Civilisation Antiquities, Art, Chinese Snuff Bottles, General Antiques, and Visiting Card Cases to mention but a few. I cover a wide variety of antiques, books, and collectables; my range encompasses everything from affordable items that promote beginners and new collectors to those that satisfy the demands and tastes of the more mature and serious collector. I refer to auctioneers, and antique and art experts for the authenticity of my stock to advise me and my customers on their demands and needs, always ensuring confidence and provenance. My mission is to give a unique service to my customers and to ensure their satisfaction with the items that they purchase from me, with authenticity and quality. I always strive to serve better.
