ITEM 1505 CONDITION
Item is in damaged condition with vast discoloration, a crack on the round pedestal base, a chip and a small hole on top of the head, and other chips in various places due to age, handling, and usage.

ITEM 1505 DESCRIPTION
An African ritual figure attributed to the African Yoruba People of Nigeria. The head has a small incised and spaced head covering which at one time had a finial. There is a long vertical crack on the back of the ritual figure and on the back of the head. The ritual figure is wearing an oval and incised lined breechcloth. The arms are extended with the hands holding votive offerings. The head is elongated and the chin is squared off; the large ears are evident; the eyes are large and bulging, a large protruding nose, and an open mouth, there is a white mark on the nose. The ritual figure is a respect and submission figure holding offerings for divinators. Cultures of Africa in 1991 were still performing and using divination, both within the urban and rural communities. Diviners might also fulfill the role of herbalists. The Yoruba divination is known as Ifa. The one object in the hand is a palm nut and the other object is a bottle. The live figure would bring the votive objects to the divination receptacle. The Ifa divination system is applied whenever an important individual decision or collective decision has to be made. Circa mid-20th century. UK POSTAGE
