A rare antique Indonesian Mandau sword, used by the Borneo Kutai/Dayak Tribe of headhunters.
19th Century. Borneo, Solid and long, front face curved, rear face flat. single-edged blade, front face and blade top edge decorated. Fine sculpted bone grip, showing the usual length of hair (Type unknown). The grip base of which is covered with rattan and leather hand grip binding. Fine wooden scabbard, with incised decoration. inset bone decoration (with some minor historic loss to one inset) , finely worked rattan binding secures scabbard halves. Total length 25".
