A Collection of 15 Antique Japanese Oshie Pressed Textile Samurai Showa Shadow Puppet DollThe Information I have been able to find about the collection is that they are Japanese handmade pressed textile pictures, known as ‘Oshie’ which is a traditional Japanese craft that can be traced back to the 17th Century.
It normally consists of multiple paper layers in sections of kimono fabric that are hand-pressed together to give a three-dimensional look.The puppets were used in a Bunraku – A traditional Japanese puppet theatre founded in Osaka in the early part of the 17th Century.Some are signed on the back.Circa: Early 20th Century.There are 15 puppets ranging from 7 inches to 13 inches.
