Dramatic Victorian British Oil Painting Historic Bamburgh Castle Armstrong Family Home Shipwreck Beached Follower of John Wilson Carmichael.
Painted in the inspired style design follower of John Wilson Carmichael.
    Unsigned British school artist.
Subject historical known marine view of Bamburgh castle, you are drawn to the focal central view of the castle perched on top of the cliff, it has a great defensive & commanding position of the seas & area. With rugged coastaline and hills in the distance on both flanks. Below are rather rough treacherous seas & waves bashing the shoreline. To the right in the sea just before the shore is a shipwreck that has become its latest victim. Its main mast is broken and missing, with bits of wreckage scattered and floating around. A large jagged rock is sticking up out of the sea further over. On the shore are 2 people possibly former crew members of the wrecked ship who are salvaging pulling on lines attached to cargo below the waterline. In the distance are other sailing ships struggling and listing on the water in the bad weather. Above a mix of grey storm clouds with lighter blue areas shining through.
    Oil on board.
Set in a later decorative gilt frame which enhances this work further, with a front protective glass cover.
A nice easy display size with the frame being 57.5 cm wide and 41.5 cm high.
Circa mid 19th century Victorian era.
Title “Historic Bamburgh Castle Armstrong Family Ancestral Home Shipwreck Beached Northumberland ” C19th Century Follower John Wilson Carmichael.
Bamburgh Castle owned by the Armstrong family, on the northeast coast of England, by the village of Bamburgh in Northumberland, is a Grade I listed building. The site was originally the location of a Celtic Brittonic fort known as Din Guarieand may have been the capital of the kingdom of Bernicia from its foundation c.420 to 547. In that last year, it was captured by King Ida of Bernicia. After passing between the Britons and the Anglo-Saxons three times, the fort came under Anglo-Saxon control in 590. The Normans later built a new castle on the site, which forms the core of the present one. After a revolt in 1095 supported by the castle's owner, it became the property of the English monarch.
In the 17th century, financial difficulties led to the castle deteriorating, but it was restored by various owners during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was finally bought by the Victorian era industrialist William Armstrong, who completed its restoration. The castle still belongs to the Armstrong family and is open to the public. Bamburgh Castle has a history of aiding seafarers & providing shelter & aid to shipwrecked sailors.
Brief biography of William Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong, CB FRS (26 November 1810 – 27 December 1900) was an English engineer and industrialist who founded the Armstrong Whitworth manufacturing concern on Tyneside. He was also an eminent scientist, inventor and philanthropist. In collaboration with the architect Richard Norman Shaw, he built Cragside in Northumberland, the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. He is regarded as the inventor of modern artillery. Armstrong was knighted in 1859 after giving his gun patents to the government. In 1887, in Queen Victoria's golden jubilee year, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Armstrong of Cragside. He purchased the castle in 1894, the castle contains his unique art collection that he adored.
Brief artist biography of John Wilson Carmichael (9 June 1799 – 2 May 1868) was a British maritime and landscape artist who painted in oil and watercolours.
