Some manufacturers of union cases were S. Peck & H. Halvorson, A.P. Critchlow & Co., Littlefield, Parsons & Co. and Holmes, Booth and Haydens. With almost 400 designs, Littlefield, Parsons & Co. produced more designs than any other company. Designs are patriotic, religious, mythological, agricultural, geometric or taken from daily life, literature, art, etc.

Cases are now given a Krainik number or Berg number. These numbers come from collector guidebooks:
Union Cases: A Collector's Guide to the Art of America's First Plastic (1988) by Clifford Krainik, Michele Krainik, and Carl Walvoord

Nineteenth Century Photographic Cases and Wall Frames by Paul Berg. The 2002 edition has more than 2,000 cases.
I don’t know which numbering system is most preferred. Some websites use Berg others use Krainik. Some use both!
