A very interesting Edwardian Arts and Crafts Patent "automatic" walnut coal box or "purdonium". When the brass and walnut handle is pushed back the twin front doors to the box open to reveal the inner liner to the coal box and its content - see Gallery of Photos. This box is complete with its original brass shovel and fittings.
With panelled front doors with roundel carvings this purdonium also has interesting detailing typical of its style and period - even down to the little hearts stamped out of the brass mounting frame for the shovel on the rear of the box.
