A beautiful fluted carved oval emerald is set into this Art Deco ring, made in the 1920s. Although the emerald originated in Columbia, it was probably imported into India through the Portuguese trading port of Goa, Columbia being part of the Portuguese Empire from the 17th century. The best emeralds were. and are, still mined there. Emeralds were especially favoured by the Moghul emperors, and large quantities of emeralds were imported and carved in India from the 17th century onwards. The emerald in this ring measures 15 x 11.5 mm with a depth of 9mm and the calculated weight is approximately 9.5 carats. It is set in platinum with about 3/4 carat of baguette and brilliant-cut diamonds.
