french masonic marquetry commode

An exceptional quality French Kingwood / tulipwood marquetry & inlaid commode with Masonic design, Circa.1840. This rare piece is in excellent overall condition, and features the original red vein marble top which is something that is very unusual as often broken over the years.

The majority of the commode is Kingwood/tulip wood; However, the commode also depicts other desirable rosewood and ebony veneers. This rare commode is of a classical break front design with canted corners (depicting ornate inlay detail) and standing on slender cabriole legs with a straight foot which is typical of the period. The Commode chest has a configuration of three drawers, all of which retain original escutcheons, handles and locks. Detail on the bottom two drawers is unique and something in all my years as an Antique dealer I have not come across. To the front of the bottom two drawers is a cartouche which details a Masonic design in marquetry and inlay detail. In short, to the top of the cartouche is an inlaid bow; below this is a detail of a house which is inset on a twig and leaf design. Immediately below this is a typical Masonic symbol of dividers and square, in addition at the base of the cartouche is a hammer and trowel design. These are in white metal that is inlaid into the commode (this could possibly be silver ~ I have not tested). This Masonic design is what makes this commode even more unique. To the sides of the commode there is the inlaid banded detail and cross banded kingwood, again to have this detail to the sides of the commode emphases the finest quality and craftsmanship at its best. It is difficult to explain so please also refer to the pictures. These commodes usually demand a price in excess of £5,000 in any retail outlet, and they are becoming rare to find in this original condition.The commode has marvellous detail and patina, in good condition and the proportions make it suitable for the contemporary or traditional setting.
