George Harcourt Sephton (1868-1947)(Ex. 1885 - 1923) Portrait of a Gentleman, oil on canvas signed dated 1921, Size 116 x86cms . Later Victorian period. Portrait and figure painter, born 11 October 1868 in Dumbarton. Trained from 1889 and taught 1897-1900 with Hurbert von Herkomer in Bushey, Herts. exh. from 1893,poetic and genre subjects, plus portraits, director of Patrick Allan-Fraser School of Art, Arbroath 1900-1909, elected ARA 1919, RA 1926, director RA Schools 1927, vice-president 1934 and president 1945 Royal Society of Portrait Painters, married fellow artist Mary Lascelles Leesmith, three daughters also followed the profession, died Hertfordshire, 30 September 1947
