Circa 1800, George III mahogany and inlaid secretaire cabinet bookcase. The bookcase top has a classic mahogany cornice with Greek key decoration, shaped moulding and then an unusual inlay which gives the impression of it being reeded but it is in fact inlaid satinwood. Below there are 2 glazed doors with simple stylish Gothic arches and double inlay on each of the astragals. There is a moulded beading on the front, and the doors open to reveal 2 adjustable sliding shelves. The bookcase retains its original glass. There is a moulding below the doors and the base of the cabinet is made up of a large secretaire drawer with 2 oval panels and brass handles. There are 3 further graduating drawers, with string inlay on the smaller drawers and string inlay and oval panels on the top drawer. On each side of the drawers is a flat section, almost like a pilaster, which has double string inlay with a slight canted corner at the top. The fore edge also has a double string inlay and the gable is slightly serpentine. The secretaire drawer is full length and opens to reveal a stylish fitted interior, with a writing surface which has been changed recently with green baize. There is a configuration of pigeon holes, various sized drawers and a centre section with a flamed mahogany door which slides up and over. Inside that are 4 further small drawers with ivory handles. Below the bottom drawer is a moulded edge, and the feet are unusual 4 block feet with string inlay on the front. The bookcase is completely original.

Georgian Antiques was founded in 1978 by John Dixon's brother Padriac in a small shop at Jocks Lodge, Meadowbank in Edinburgh, with John joining the business after finishing college in 1981. The business grew so rapidly, they couldn't keep up with their inventory needs. Their goal has been to create a one-stop-shop where designers can complete an entire project from antique lighting to antique furniture to accessories. Scotland's largest antiques warehouse is located in a converted whiskey bond in historic Leith Edinburgh. With 50,000sq ft over five floors we offer a wide range of quality Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, as well as continental and small decorative items. Our stock is constantly changing.
