Antique George V Rectangular Silver Photograph Frame by William Aitken Birmingham 1919

A good sterling silver photograph frame by William Aitken, Birmingham 1919. The frame is of plain rectangular form with broad silver frame. The solid oak back with hinged easel-type support and removeable window secured by two corner tabs and two swivel tab. Renewed navy watermarked moire backing behind its glass cover. Hallmarked for the Birmingham Assay Office 1919 and for silversmith William Aitken. The frame measures 20 cm by 15 cm. Aperture measures 16.5 cm by 11.5 cm.
This silver frame is in excellent overall condition commensurate with age. The silver frame is very good condition with a few very minor 'pin-pricks' (very difficult to see) and very minor signs of use. Frame back is solid. Hinge to support and tabs securing the window are all sound. Please see images as they forms an important part of the description.

William Aitken was a Birmingham silversmith initially based at Vyse Street and later at Eagle Works, 78 Summer Row, Birmingham. He registered marks at both the Birmingham and Chester assay offices. Aitken was active during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods producing silver and silver-plated items. In John Culme's Directory we read: “it is an impossibility to mention any article which can be made in silver that is not in the stock of this firm... The motto of the house is 'Nothing is too large; nothing is too small', and from the tiniest trinket to the heaviest piece of plate Mr. Aitken is well at home".
