Approx 9 m long / 22 cm wide
This long scroll is a Janam Patri or horoscope. It is painted on handmade paper.
It is a practice among Hindu families to create an astrological chart for every new born baby that is based on the positions of the planets, sun, moon and stars at the time of birth. There are charts, tables and depictions of Hindu dieties. As well are decorative imagery of the planets and zodiac signs. Inclusion of these elements is determined by the wealth of the patron commissioning them.
The purpose of the chart is to foretell the future and cite obstacles that might be faced.
These were also used to fix marriages by determining the compatibility of the couple.
Since the mid 20th century, these have been in the form of a notebook. Therefore, long ones such as this one are harder to find.
The scroll is produced by glueing together sheets of handmade paper. The language is probably Sanskrit.
This would likely have been produced for the aristocracy.
There is some damage over the decades. This is easily understood taking into account that these scrolls deteriorate easily because of the extreme climate in India and the wear and tear of a horoscope’s daily use. But this remains a wonderful piece.
