The Holy Trinity Church is the largest parish church in England when floor area is the measurement for comparison. The church dates back to about 1300 and contains what is widely acknowledged to be some of the finest medi?val brick-work in the country, particularly in the transepts. Holy Trinity Church is now a Grade I listed building. William Wilberforce, who led the parliamentary campaign against the slave trade, was baptised in Holy Trinity Church. This magnificent awe-inspiring building is over 700 years old and appears in the Guinness Book of Records as England''s largest parish church (by area). There are many outstanding examples of stained glass work throughout the church. What Holy Trinity lacks in medieval glass, it more than compensates for in a rewarding range of Victorian and 20th Century glass of the highest quality. These include two ?arts and crafts? windows designed by the world-renowned Walter Crane, which are unrivalled in their class. Like the rest of the Churches of the East Riding, there is scarcely any ancient glass to be found in Holy Trinity. Most of the medieval glass has perished over time or was destroyed during a zeppelin raid in the First World, though remnants were used to create a unique mosaic window in the South Transept.
?Of all the parochial churches in England this is one of the grandest. Indeed, it may be said to take the first rank.? So began a description of Holy Trinity in Bulmer''s Gazetteer of 1892. ?The architects and builders of the days when this church was built had a noble idea of the relative importance of the habitations of man and the temples devoted to the worship of God. This church records their efforts in every column, and line, and arch, and in its silent eloquence we learn that the men of the old time built in the belief that against their church the gates of hell should not prevail, and erected, for all time, a place where men should worship in the ?beauty of holiness?.?
