Exceptionally Fine and Rare Hand Carved Irish Bog Oak Figural Owl of Museum Quality and medium proportions, quite possibly by Cornelius Goggin. Made during the Mid Nineteenth Century.
The hinged head is complete with its original brown and black glass eyes each with a very unusual and seldom (if ever) seen decorative brass surrounds.
The Owl is firmly perched on a naturalistic base with its brass talons present, one foot is chained to lower base which is lavishly carved depicting overlapping ferns all around.
Condition: Exceptional condition for such an early piece with no losses visible, wonderful surface patination.
Height: (entire as shown on main image) 5.25" (13.5cm). Diameter: (at base, just under) 3.25” (8.25cm).

Cornelius Goggin: One of the best-known Nineteenth Century Irish bog oak Craftsmen was Kerry Man Cornelius Goggin who set up premises at Nassau Street in Dublin and received a royal warrant – reveling in the title: “Irish Bog Oak Carver To Her Majesty”.
The National Museum of Ireland currently has a similar example which bears a makers label of Cornelius Goggin. Irish Bog Oak Carver to Her Majesty. 13 Nassau Street, Dublin.
