For me these gouaches are an important part of history.This beautiful Italian 19th century gouache of the port and bay of the charming fishing town of Naples with finely detailed boats, fishermen, people, horses and carriages with the town in the background. You can feel the vibrancy and the atmosphere from this competent artist.Many years ago when The Portobello market was an antique dealers haven. I had  small indoor stand, which thrived, and I got to know the real London dealers from 5 am on Friday and Saturday mornings.My neighbour specialised in 19th century Italian gouaches. He was always busy selling these daily to the Italian dealers and nothing stayed on his stand longer than one day so I started to buy them also.As soon as I showed him my finds he snapped them off me for a bargain and sold them at a profit.That's the best way to learn how to be an antiques dealer.
Italian gouaches are so soft, opaque and translucent and fast to dry making it easy for artist to complete quickly. Many tourists used this form of painting whilst they travelled as it was easy to transport and easy to sell.Often created for the tourist industry but may convey more dramatic news worthy scenes like  Vesuvius and its continuous eruptions. For me they have more depth than a watercolour and have stronger colours and can fetch 6 figure  prices but they are easy to collect and enjoy.
