Smith studied with the Newcastle master Thomas Miles Richardson, Sr. (1784-1848) and in 1854 moved to London, where he set up as a drawing master and built up an extensive teaching practice, concentrating on watercolour painting. Smith exhibited work at Suffolk Street London 1850 to 1881 and painted landscapes in Northumberland, the Lake District, Scotland, Wales and Germany
