Sendai Isho Bo Tansu.
Sendai Isho Bo Tansu are very rare and much sought after- particular in this condition! It is in remarkable condition for its age ( Approx 1880 - 1910 )
I am luck enough to have two Sendai Tansu available today , and I believe they are the only true Sendai Tansu available in the UK today - in this remarkable condition.
This one is with with Mokko forged handles, highly ornamental metal fittings. The top draw has a beautiful full plate depicting a Dragon, and the bottom draw - depicting a Tiger. The Top draw was said to be long enough to store the Samurais swords, while the other larger drawers is said to store Kimono’s. The carcass made from Japanese cedar, and draw fronts made form keyaki wood, finished in kijiro Urushi, over red stain. Nine drawers in all - ( 3 behind the small door) .
This Sendai Isho Bo Tansu, it a beautiful example of the Sendai style. If you have been looking for a Sendai Tansu - you will know very rarely come up for sale. As you can see it is in beautiful condition considering its age ( Late Meiji - Early Tashio ) and please I encourage you to search for another available in this condition anywhere in the UK.

As all our Tansu’s for sale - All are carefully assessed - and then
we decide what restoration is needed ( If any - some just require a polish and wax. ) We keep all out Tansu restoration to a minimum - bearing in mind we want all our Tansu to be able to go into your home immediately so you can enjoy it without worrying about any restoration, which of course is costly. This Tansu is in original condition and with original finish. No restoration was needed other than address a few small scratches which of course for a period piece this is quite acceptable. It has been waxed and polished and ready for you to enjoy in your home.
It is approximately 100 years old. Meiji/Tashio Era.
