    George Smith of Chichester (1714-1776)
The most talented in a family of three painters.
Born in Chichester in 1714, he lost his father early, then it is placed at his uncle then at his older brother. At this time, under the gaze and protection of the Duke of Richmond, he refines and expands its landscape art. It is inspired by the classic design of two painters he admires, Claude Lorrain and Poussin. Soon, its reputation and success extends to the mainland where it is called the "British Gessner" because as Solomon Gessner (Swiss landscape painter) he devotes himself to poetry but the comparison ends there. George Smith of Chichester is indeed highly sought, he exhibited in London from 1760 to 1774 sends 103 paintings to exhibitions of the Society and is free in 1760 he obtained for the first time, a company's first price Arts for a landscape. It will again be rewarded in 1761 and then in 1763 and will join the Royal Academy in 1774. Most of the works of George Smith of Chichester have been etched by great writers and some by himself, assisted by his brothers. The engraving we offer with the painting was by William Woollett George Smith of Chichester is exposed in numerous museums, National Gallery, London; Tate Collection, London ... Note that this table is very similar but larger and with more characters of a painting sold by Sothebys in London in 2006 (€ 28,000 fee included).
