Circa 1890. Attractive late 19th century mahogany open bookcase, by famous cabinetmakers Maples & Company. The upper bookcase section with four adjustable bookshelves surmounted by a neat moulded cornice with simple frieze and flanked by fluted pilasters. The base with two frieze drawers with brass swan-neck handles and mahogany drawer linings (sign of quality). The base with deeper bookshelf and a door bearing a metal label ‘Maple & Company’. All supported on shaped bracket feet.

Maple & Co was first established by John Maple but it was his son, John Maple, who pushed Maples & Co to be such a huge success. By the 1880s they exported their fine antique furniture to many different countries and were well known throughout the interiors world. Georgian Antiques was founded in 1978 by John Dixon's brother Padriac in a small shop at Jocks Lodge, Meadowbank in Edinburgh, with John joining the business after finishing college in 1981. The business grew so rapidly, they couldn't keep up with their inventory needs. Their goal has been to create a one-stop-shop where designers can complete an entire project from antique lighting to antique furniture to accessories. Scotland's largest antiques warehouse is located in a converted whiskey bond in historic Leith Edinburgh. With 50,000sq ft over five floors we offer a wide range of quality Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, as well as continental and small decorative items. Our stock is constantly changing.
