A fine and rare early Georgian Walnut Kneehole Bureau/ Desk. Of lovely patination and in very good condition.
The vast majority of kneehole desks or dressing tables are in appearance like a chest of drawers with a central recessed space backed by a cupboard. Rarely they have a secretaire drawer like this fine example with a hinged fall-front which lowers onto two support arms which are withdrawn by small handles.
The fall front forms a leather covered writing surface and the bureau is revealed with two large compartments above two small shaped handled drawers on each side of a locking cabinet.
Below the fall-front there is one long locking drawer and three narrower graduated drawers on either side of a recessed cupboard.
The whole body is in wonderfully patinated walnut veneer. The top is quarter cut and the fall-front is reverse burr walnut.
The handles are all matching and original. It stands on six ogee bracket feet.
It is a lovely neat size.
Although it shows some small signs of wear and age and some minor cracking on one side, it is in good condition and is both a collectors piece and a lovely addition to any home, being of a size to fit most situations. The drawers slide open and closed easily. There are keys for the locks which click shut. It displays wonderful craftsmanship. Rare and desirable.
