Snaefellsj?kul Volcano is the largest and best-known in Iceland. It sits in the centre of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula on the western side of the island, and on clear days can be seen from as far away as Reykjavik, 120km away. The volcano was made famous by Jules Verne as the base for his Journey to the Center of the Earth novel, with the volcano forming the entrance passage. The summit of the volcano is 1,446m above sea level, and can be hiked by experience climbers, although it is covered by snow most of the year.
