The Icon of the Sign of the Most Holy Theotokos (also known as Oranta) is one of the most revered subjects of Orthodox iconography in Rus`. The miraculous image, kept in Veliky Novgorod, served as the source of numerous copies that over the centuries spread throughout the provinces of the Russian Empire, preserving their spiritual and cultural significance to this day. This icon was painted in the second half of the 19th century in one of the icon-painting workshops in central Russia. It is executed in the style of life-likeness, which was especially popular in imperial Russia of that period. Gilded brass pulpit. 19th century

      sia antion, riga, latvia

The 19th century neo-Gothic style desk pulpit is a work of decorative and applied art that is distinguished by its exquisite workmanship and detailing. The pulpit body is made of gilded brass and is installed on a square base that rests on four claw-shaped legs, giving the structure a majestic and monumental appearance. Along the perimeter of the pulpit there is an elegant turned decor with elements of partially openwork foliage and floral motifs, which adds a sense of lightness and airiness to the overall massiveness of the product. Architectural elements complement the composition, creating the impression of an ancient Gothic building in miniature. The central part of the pulpit facade is a blue enamel cross, decorated with coat of arms lilies, symbolizing royal power and purity. In the center of the cross there is a red cabochon, which brings an accent of bright color and emphasizes the importance of the composition. The analogion itself is engraved with a similar cross, maintaining harmony and continuity in the design. The dimensions of the pulpit when closed are: height - 8.5 cm, length - 25 cm, depth - 28.5 cm. When open, its height increases to 25 cm, length - to 26 cm, and the depth remains the same - 28.5 cm. • Icon of the Lord Almighty with a Scepter and Orb, Russia, circa 1908-1917

Icon of the Lord Almighty with a Scepter and Orb, Russia, circa 1908-1917

      sia antion, riga, latvia

The icon The Lord Almighty is a striking example of Russian Art Nouveau in icon painting of the early 20th century. The image of the Savior is made on a smooth silver gilded background, which creates a shining effect and emphasizes the sacredness of the image. The face of the Lord is presented in a waist-length composition, the heavenly kingdom is revealed before Him. Traditional attributes, a scepter and orb - symbolize the power and omnipotence of the Savior. The icon frame is made in the form of a temple with domes, decorated with chased elements and curls symbolizing heavenly clouds. The composition is complemented by two red cabochons located in the lower part of the frame, which emphasizes the solemnity of the icon and its significance. The rounded corners of the frame add harmony, characteristic of Russian Art Nouveau, and the holder for hanging is made in strict geometric forms, which reflects the influence of late Art Nouveau. Hallmarks: The hallmark of the letter MK is presumably the hallmark of Mikhail Yegorovich Karpinsky, a hallmark in an oval shield of the Moscow District Assay Office, consisting of the numbers 84 indicating the sample; a woman`s head in a kokoshnik, facing right, corresponding to the period 1908-1917. The original red velvet is preserved on the reverse side of the icon. Dimensions: height 9 cm, width 6 cm. Thickness 1.5 cm. sia antion, riga, latvia

Magnificent holidays with a passionate row, an annual menaion and a two-row cycle of icons of the Mother of God - a kind of encyclopedia of the Mother of God images. A majestic monument to Christianity and late Russian icon painting, where in one image the annual and Mother of God universe of Orthodoxy is revealed, full of sacrifice. With the epicenter of suffering and resurrection, the testimony of all the upcoming saints and with hope in the miraculous images of the intercessor. The Virgin Mary series is interrupted by the marks of Unexpected Joy, Joy of All Who Sorrow, the Sign and Coronation of Mary - milestones of the communion and growth of spiritual truths. The Passion Series is composed of: the Ascension of Mary, the Old Testament Trinity, the Entry into Jerusalem, the Raising of Lazarus, the Washing of the Feet, the Last Supper, the Flagellation of Christ, the Imposition of the Crown of Thorns, the Carrying of the Cross, the Crucifixion, the Descent from the Cross and the Entombment. Particularly attractive is the rare completeness of the lists of icons of the Mother of God, which can serve as an encyclopedia of the Mother of God images. The bright decorative painting on a golden background sounds excitingly solemn and life-affirming. Cypress board, gesso, tempera, gilding. Russia. Second half of the 19th century. sia antion, riga, latvia

Rare, Russian, silver icon of Archangel Raphael, painted, cloisonné and champlevé enamels. Probably a complex, private order, presumably executed by the factory master P. Ovchinnikov. Intimate and at the same time festive, the breastplate bears a half-length image of Archangel Raphilus with holy scripture in his hands. The gentle face and folds of the Archangel’s clothes are subtly depicted in the shimmering purity of silver, affirming the sacred purity and holiness of the heavenly powers. The high reliquary fields of the icon and its reverse side are decorated in accordance with the neo-Russian style of the 19th century - a triangular pattern alternating with foliage and a cross with Gothic curls around the flowers. The eyelet for the lace, on a turning loop, is also decorated with belts of cloisonné and champlevé enamel. • Russian icon of the Pantocrator on a thick cypress board from the mid-19th century.

Russian icon of the Pantocrator on a thick cypress board from the mid-19th century.

      sia antion, riga, latvia

Impressive and heavy Icon of the Pantocrator on a thick cypress board without dowels, mid-19th century. Canonically represents the half-figure of Christ with a blessing gesture and an open Gospel. With titles in baroque cartouches on the sides of the halo and an ornamental belt separating the image from the margins. On which are presented: St. Michael the Scribe and St. Agnia the Martyr. The order of execution and the dimensions of the expensive board require special care and quality of painting. Even now it is a monument to the icon painting art of the mid-19th century, bearing the imprint of noble sublimity, decorative and stylistic harmony. The influence of the second baroque is summed up by the contrasts of the black lines of the cartouches and the black and gold belt around the dark chitin of the Pantocrator. All around, muted olive tones of flowers convey a general atmosphere of humanized warmth and meekness. The aura of mercy is emitted by the faded, craquelure background of the icon and the soft color of the fields, preserving the nostalgia of a long time ago and a thing made with love. Russia 1850-1860. Icon size: 40x34.2 x4.4 cm.
