Stephen Hawking is one of the most distinguished scientists of his generation and was appointed the Lucasion professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University in 1979 having previously held the chair of gravitational physics since 1977. He was born in 1942 and educated at St Albans School and University College Oxford, he obtained his phd at Cambridge and became fellow of Gonville and Caius Collge in 1965, subsequently holding various appointments at Cambridge Univeristy. Professor Hawking''s main work is in the field of general relativity; he has achieved notable success in the theorey and undertanding of black holes. He has published many books and has received many honours and awards in the last 30 years. Since the early 1960''s he has suffered from a progressive nervous disease which has confined him to a wheelchair. He |ives in Cambridge with his wife and three children.Yolanda Sonnabend was commisioned by the Trustees of the National Portrait Gallery, London to paint a portrait of Stephen Hwking in 1984. This portrait is one of a number of studies that the artist completed in the process of reaching the finnished portraits of the scientist. The finnished paintings are now in the National Portrait Gallery, The Science Museum, and Caius College Cambridge.
