This incredible piece of 17th-century history consists of a large piece of faceted crystal in a rub-over bezel setting with a scalloped design; inside, an intricately crafted scene. A woven plaque lies on top of the vivid blue background. To the left of the plaque is a gold cherub holding a staff. To the right is a vase with red detailing, sitting on top of a pedestal. The back of the ring is plain and polished, with the head of the ring leading into a plain 18ct gold band.
Stuart Crystal gained prominence after King Charles I's 1649 execution as a symbol of loyalty and mourning. Pieces often displayed royalist emblems like crowns or skulls, reflecting grief and political allegiance. Worn by supporters of Charles I, they discreetly signalled solidarity during political unrest. These pieces later went on to be used as Memento Mori jewellery, love tokens given at weddings, or used to commemorate significant events.
This ring, circa 1650-1680, tests as 18ct gold. It is in good condition with light marks commensurate with age.
