victorian walnut coal box purdonium

A very interesting late Victorian Patent "automatic" walnut coal box or "purdonium". When the brass and walnut handle is pushed back the twin front doors to the box open to reveal the inner liner to the coal box and its content - see Gallery of Photos. This box is complete with its original shovel and fittings and is stamped "Patent 9" on the handle mount.
Sitting on small turned wooden feet and with panelled front doors this purdonium also has interesting carving and detailing typical of its style and period - even down to the little hearts stamped out of the brass mounting frame for the shovel on the rear of the box. The only one of its type that we have seen with the "automatic" Patent door opening mechanism.
