Antique Vietnamese Ancestor Memorial Tablet

Carved wooden memorial stand depicting a couple carved in relief in gold lacquer, above them the image of the moon. Surface wear and paint loss, chips.
Stands such as these were used in household shrines and clan temples to memorialize the dead. The top of this stand can detatch from the support on which it sits. Inscription at the back, may be the names of those being honored.

This item depicts the belief that the departed have a continual and beneficent interest in the affairs of the living. As it shows two carved images, it is likely meant to honor a couple that was significant to a particular area and who are deemed to be heroic.

19th century.
