Vestal, ancient Rome priestess dedicated to Vesta
Canvas of 95 cm by 76 cm.
Very important part restoration with a high quality gilding 128 cm by 109 cm.
The Vestals were 2 and 4 and 6. They were finally selected among girls aged 6 to 10 years and had to be without physical defect, not orphans and not emancipated by their father.
Their outfits consisted of a white tunic strips to hold the hair that was typical of the Roman matron. They could also wear a red cap on a 6 braids hair typical of married women at the time.
Their service lasted 30 years and they could then return to civilian life and thus to marry if they wanted to.
