A magnificent painting by the famous Austrian artist, master of light and shadow, Albert Rieger (1834-1905). The canvas depicts a dramatic scene: the rescue of shipwrecked people off the coast of Genoa. The drama of the scene, the exquisite play of light on the seething waves and the finest elaboration of details create a unique atmosphere of a sea battle and hope for salvation. This work reflects the exceptional skill of Albert Rieger, famous for his landscapes and sea scenes, and conveys a sense of direct presence at the moment of a heroic feat. The painting is signed by the author in the lower right part: A. Rieger. Pinx. The canvas is framed in an original superb gilded stucco frame, emphasizing the artistic value of the work and making it a complete masterpiece. Technique: oil on canvas. Period of creation: third quarter of the 19th century. The canvas measures approximately 68 x 116 cm, and the frame measures approximately 95 x 144 cm. On the back of the canvas is an old label which bears the handwritten title Genoa (marine) A. Rieger, together with an old price and the inscription A. Rieger in Vienna. Historical information: Albert Rieger (1834–1905) was an Austrian artist best known for his dark, muted landscapes depicting mountains, waterways, and forests. Rieger was born on May 6, 1834 in Trieste, Italy, the son of the renowned artist Giuseppe Rieger, with whom he initially studied art. From 1838, Albert lived in Vienna, where he was inspired by the surrounding landscapes and nature to create his masterpieces. The artist specialized in realistic mountain, sea and rural landscapes, characterized by detailed elaboration, special attention to light and masterful use of contrasts of shadow and light. Historical information: Joseph Forest (1865 – ?) was an outstanding French geographer and cartographer who left a significant mark in the field of cartography and educational materials. Forest`s publishing house, originally located at 17-19 rue de Bussy in Paris, later moved to Bagneux on rue 13th October. A unique mantel clock made of glass and bronze made during the period of Nicholas I (1825-1855) in the style of the late Empire. The solar theme of the luminary rising from the waters is associated with the nature of abundance in the ornament of the dial and the dominant flowerpot on conical glass. The general leitmotif of the mobility of waves and time , permeates the work and is noticeable in the rhythm of the glass and the dial pattern. In the center of the composition, He and She are Helios’ assistants. Alpha and Omega of the universe. They rise from the waves and hold the luminary, affirming love, life, fertility. This is the connecting thread of times. The clock is made of gilded and polished bronze and cobalt glass, presumably made at the Imperial Glass Factory in St. Petersburg, with bronze bases of floral designs.
