This year interiors are taking a botanical turn as walls and furnishings are turned into different shades of green. And you can’t but help but admire the shades and patterns currently on offer.
Even if you weren’t considering a refurb or change of décor this year, it’s enough to tempt you into change. Even Mathew Williamson has decided to chip in with some gorgeous wallpaper designs for Osborne & Little. They capture nature’s miracles perfectly, with dragonflies, wild birds and flora and fauna in a variety of beautiful hues that are bound to transform any room.
With such an emphasis on botanical décor it’s a great time to try and source antique pieces that fit in with this new aesthetic.
You can stay with just fabrics and walls or you can make certain additions that create a really authentic feel.
Antique pieces that help create a botanical theme to be proud of
On www.antiques.co.uk there are some beautiful botanical prints and charts that would add charm to any wall. As an example there’s a beautiful set of 14 Victorian antique botanical prints, and as well as that, over in our new interior design category, there are some exquisite globes, although not quite with the botanical theme, it reminds one of Victorian exploration, and Darwinian discoveries. Although a little ornate, the brass crane candlesticks from the late 19th century are quite beautiful and give a natural feel to a room.
Different categories for different things
Don’t forget that as well as using the interior design category you can type in almost anything into the search engine and it’ll come up with some interesting finds. Simply putting the word “green” into the search engine brought up some really superior items, such as the pair of Georgian II style open armchairs or the green Iii style Mahogany Display Cabinet, a really gorgeous late 19th century item that would add something special to a botanical themed room.
In the antique textile category I found some really attractive tapestries, some with detailed embroidered flowers which is keeping with the theme and there are some beautiful rugs (found by simply typing “rugs” in the search engine).
Search in the fossil category and you’ll find some pieces there that will fit in nicely with a botanical, nature inspired room, such as the green triangular Malchite Pyramid or the mounted fossil plaque and ammonite on a base.
Once you’ve found a few key pieces and you’ve chosen the colours for your walls and curtains/blinds, you’ve got the makings of a really beautiful room that fits in with the botanical theme, but also creates a room that has your individuality and character at its heart, offering a warm welcome to all who enter.
Take your botanical theme upstairs as well as downstairs
Of course the botanical theme isn’t just reserved for the living area, it can work just as easily with a bedroom or bathroom. By mixing and matching antique pieces with contemporary walls and other furnishings you have a beautiful nature inspired botanical room with various shades of green that put you in the mood for summer afternoons and lazy evenings in the garden.
