Collecting and Selling Antiques in 2014

Posted by Gill Jones on 07/01/2014

As the New Year rolls in everyone starts to think about the year ahead. Some of you may be thinking of clearing out the old things in your life as part of some new year’s resolution. You clear out old things that seem of no further use and replace them with new and more useful items. While you’re doing this it may seem likely that you’re looking at old treasured items that you don’t really want to throw away. It could be that they are of sentimental value. If that’s the case, then rather than do something hasty and throw them out, why not keep them and start a collection?

    What is an antique?

The term antique has certainly changed to encompass more items that it once did. Once upon a time, a specific item had to be of a certain age before it would even be considered an antique. Items would have to be from before 1840, but now things have changed, items up to and including World War II can now be considered antique. Also, more and more items are considered antique where once they would have been thought of as memorabilia or more contemporary furniture from the 60s.

    The fickle times
Value of items can go up and down with the times, you may be holding on to an item right now that is worth little, but keep it a little longer and it may be worth something and increase in value. Marks, the condition, fashion and popularity of the item can determine how much your item could be worth.

It’s a good idea to take care of your item whether you’ve bought in a shop or whether you found it in the attic. Never try to repair a potentially collectable piece as you could damage it further and decrease its worth.

    Collection
If you decide to keep your treasured item, then you easily start a collection of your own, look in shops, check websites, magazines and reference books to find out more and then start collecting other items to add to it. Make sure it’s something you can keep on looking at, if it’s going to be in your house and there’s going to be more than one, don’t collect something that you’re going to hate after about 6 months!

If you decide you don’t really want it and you think it may be worth something then why not have it listed on www.antiques.co.uk?
