Anthony Quinn‘s Eye, Mexican Art and a new London Exhibition
Anthony Quinn‘s Eye, Mexican Art and a new London Exhibition
Mexican culture is as rich and diverse as its history and an important part of Mexican society. It filters into every aspect of daily life, the modern lives side by side with the old, the Aztecs and all the old celebrations, such as the Day of the Dead and the Catholic inspired All Souls Day. The revolution has particular meaning in artistic expression as artists were encouraged by the government to paint murals of Mexican history and the ideas that sprung from the revolution. Diego Rivera created one of these murals and his wife Frida Kahlo, also a famous artist, used her painting to express political ideas in her work. She was renowned for using symbols and bright colours and combined these with different themes. Mexico’s music is full of traditional elements using both colonial and modern influences. Ballads and stories abound telling stories of heroes, romance and old legends. Mayas, Aztecs, revolutions and Catholicism all combine to make a diverse landscape from which to work with, a rich tapestry of influences that Mexico’s writers and artists have been making use of for hundreds of years.
Anthony Quinn perhaps one of Mexico’s most famous artists aside from Frida Kahlo was also known for his acting, but was a prolific artist and sculptor whose work will form part of an exhibition starting this weekend May 18th through to Saturday June 7th in London at Gallery Different, 14 Percy Street. You can take a quick look at his work on the GoneModern.com site where Mexican influences are evident in both his sculptures and painting with strong colours and surrealist themes.
Please come along and see the exhibition and perhaps you may find yourself inspired to create something too. Quinn’s work is certainly inspiring and this important exhibition is something not to be missed. We look forward to seeing you there.
