The World Cup has arrived
That’s the World Cup for you; just as well it’s only once every 4 years. But it is an opportunity to have barbecues outside, drink Caipirinha with plenty of ice and just immerse ourselves in it until it’s over.
The World Cup is upon us, even for those of us who don’t take an interest in football for the rest of the year (such as myself) are suddenly experts in football. We sit up until the wee small hours catching up on the latest matches, shouting offside and supporting teams from countries we’ve never even heard of.
The World Cup has arrived
That’s the World Cup for you; just as well it’s only once every 4 years. But it is an opportunity to have barbecues outside, drink Caipirinha with plenty of ice and just immerse ourselves in it until it’s over.
Oh and then there’s Wimbledon and the Commonwealth Games to follow…aren’t we lucky to have all this sport to look forward to over the summer months?
It’s a good opportunity at this time to search through your attic. Before you say it, yes it is hot and who wants to search through a dusty old attic for old relics and antiques at this time of year.
What’s in the attic?
Well, we’re talking sporting memorabilia and there’ll be plenty of it around and discussed throughout the world cup during and after, in the media, pubs and in back gardens while we mulch over an over cooked burger and a glass of warm sticky beer.
But wait a minute, sport memorabilia can be fun; it can be both interesting and absorbing and worth a little more money than you think.
Football relics
In a recent article in the Telegraph they tell us that according to experts, any kit worn by World Cup winning players could be worth hundreds or even thousands of pounds. Apparently, someone was willing to pay the princely sum of £157, 750 for Pele’s shirt, which he wore at the 1970 World Cup final in Brazil.
Football programmes for individual matches also go for a lot of money. One collector sold all the programmes for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden (one for each game) for a few thousand pounds. So it may be worth looking in your attic after all.
Football sticker items aren’t worth much but miscellaneous items and cuddly toys are. So perhaps you should go and look in your attic pronto and if you do find something and you’re not exactly sure what it might be worth, then one of our experts can cast an eye over it. It doesn’t cost much to place your items on our site and you may be surprised at the amount of exposure we get, guaranteeing you a global audience.
Don’t like football?
You may not be into sport memorabilia at all or perhaps not football. There are some interesting items on our site under “Sporting Antiques.” Here in this section you’ll find everything from half size billiard tables to a vintage kayak and a 9ct gold sporting medallion.
My favourite item has to be the brass billiard light fitting from the end of the 19th century with the renowned “Burroughes & Watts, London.” Naturally it was intended as a billiard light, however it could just as easily be used for the kitchen or a large dining or living area. It really is superb. And that’s sports memorabilia for you, you never know what you might find and you never know what it might be worth.
Okay, perhaps you couldn’t really use Pele’s shirt as a light fitting or turn it into a pair of curtains, but sport memorabilia has so much potential. So get up to that attic or the spare room and get searching, you never know what you might find.
