Very Fine condition the bronze with some light pitting.Width 8.8 cms (3.5 ins). Internal diam 6.5 cms (2.56 ins)Context: The ancient lands of the Near East once had the reputation of being infested with poisonous snakes, and although this was a wild exaggeration, the local fauna does include venomous snakes, which must have always played an important and dangerous role in the lives of ancient peoples. It is not surprising therefore to find snake motifs appearing in ancient art.
