The Symbolic still life is a reflection on the structure of society through «Toy Story». Standing on the pedestal of society, which in the still life is presented by an old camera, (with allusions to the media, ready to gaze admiringly at those on the pedestal through the lenses) is the muscular «master of life», a winner in whom one can easily recognize the features of a cult movie hero. And yet in contrast to him, as if striving to go beyond the format, socially marginalized, there is the jester, whose gaze, colors of the clothes and frozen foot movement, are bright and light. But, looking closely, we realize that this is the puppet T1000. The «mercury» cyborg, capable of taking any appearance, first of all copying the one of police officer Austin whom he killed ... What is victory and what is defeat? Why are his clothes red? What is his sadness about? Who is the leader and who is the outsider? Prettiness as well as brutality, even puppet-like, can be deceptive... As the entourage of the situation there serve the copper, shining like pipes, Chinese smoking pipes from the time of the «opium wars» and a dried bouquet of roses, symbolizing the rise and fall of earthly glory. And the candleholder standing between the pipes serves as a biblical reminder: «Let your lamps be burning at all times». The connecting thread of the times is the photographs of the film characters from the past, taking us back to a time when the lens was not a PR crystal ball, but a wise eye of memory. The heroic age, having bypassed with its measured tread from the Hellenic mythology and the gladiators of Ancient Rome, flashed as a bright, but sunset 24-frame glow on Hollywood screens in the 80-90s. The song about the Last Hero of the last moments of the era of patriarchal masculinity subsides... The symbol of today is the iron stilleto heel of feminism under the rainbow of tolerance trampling the fallen terminator. Like the giant steamship Titanic, having gone through the evolutionary chain from ancient Greek myths to screen images, the era of heroes is leaving the stage of history. Yet over the reality itself, in its original understanding, where Pelevin’s «object and subject number one» dominated, digital waves are concatenating. Through them, only the thumb of «everything is OK» can be seen, standing on its command bridge, the Last Titan. Reality, recently capable of the triumph of incarnation, the anthem of corporality, sinks to the bottom, slowly becoming covered with a layer of silt from the waste of the consumption era and digital rust... The fallen one contemplates the sunset, indifferently turning away from the world collapsing under Khokhloma-painted explosions, which again needs to be saved. Today there are those who can do it. Near the glasses frames, instead of the inscription «target detected», there also remains only the Khokhloma pattern ... Andrey Kartashov graduated from the A. When the iron curtain finally fell, a load of attributes of a new formula of happiness fell on the head of the new man, exposed to the winds of change. The enticing transatlantic shimmering and the song of sirens with their nasal voices from video salons formed semantic patterns for a whole generation who wished to somehow get its Golden Ticket to that dimension. Now it was possible to take off the armored jacket and enjoy the forbidden fruit. However, it was the prohibition on the fruit that gave rise to the cult of such one. Glossy pictures, which only yesterday served as an impregnable guarantor of existential fulfillment, today turned out to be within walking distance, perhaps causing confusion. Tired of his heroic deeds, Hercules took off his mask and appeared to be Zeus in disguise, the king of the New Olympus, whose star-striped shadow with a Styrian accent covered half the world. Generation P, who had time to enjoy Brodsky, changed his collections to the Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding, and complimentary passes to the Mariinsky Theater for tickets to the video salon. Time was running out as if it were golden sand of money, which could be used to purchase a more expensive watch, giving the right to come to both the parties of the celestials and the daughters of men. Clay Mercedes and straw planes could be easily purchased with new vouchers. This did not stop one from enviously worshiping fighter planes made of super-strength straw and Mercedes made of clay from the Dead Sea... At least no one forbade looking at the world through the new bamboo glasses catching the ebony gaze of someone for whom a platinum Rolex and a broken Seiko in the hair show the same time, in the face of which even the star-striped Zeuso-Hercules, bending the wooden arc of time and becoming its axis, was yoking thought and balance together. A yoke is a frame fitted to a person’s shoulders to carry a load in two equal portions, and in this picture it serves as a lever for transferring the severity of thoughts (more precisely, a difficult choice) ? there is nothing on both ends of the yoke. In this picture, the balance point of the yoke is not the shoulders, but the head ... Andrey Kartashov graduated from the A. An interpretation of the ancient myth, where the role of Sisyphus is played by a media person, or rather the back of a movie character, patiently rolling a boulder bearing the imprinted artifacts of consumer civilization to the alluring peaks of the glamor of the possible, to the monetized freedom of capital. The boulder becomes a curse and a blessing: the peaks beckon and oblige, there are millions of ways to reach the top and to roll the boulder – they will suffice for an eternity. The hands of the hero, century after century, soften the sharp edges of the boulder, overgrown with new artifacts of cultures and religions... The era of consumption has turned the universe into an illusory pipeline of possibilities. You must be an achiever. You must succeed. You must push up your boulder. Why should you be thinking of the purpose of doing this? In this particular case, we see on the top of Sisyphus’s mountain the outlines of the Statue of Liberty and the Oscar statuette. And the recognizable back of the man who succeeded. But hasn’t the boulder rolled down after touching the coveted peaks? The boulder acts as an allegory of dualism, reconciling the era of claims with a sense of duty. The noosphere of globalization and the ball of a scarab beetle simultaneously... With his thoughtful eyes staring into the distance the movie character in «Butterflies of Memories» seems to be petrified. The twilight of space turns into silvery fabric of memories. Echoes of the past and the future have intricately intertwined and merged at the point of the absolute «Here and Now». There is a solitary figure at the bar table: “Techno”, who is gazing with fascination into the light of the lamp, awaiting for his fate. It is the profile of the hero embodying incredible images which have been imprinted in the memory of generations for good. What pictures are arising in his mind? However, there is neither the past nor the future any longer. The destruction machine from the future and the drawing boy from the past have met. In the disturbing gloom of the bar a spark of hope is pulsating. The eyes of the hero are full of wisdom gained through the experience of the past years and great achievements, he is asking the ecclesiasto-Warholian question: «So, what?” The gazes of the woman awaiting for her fate, of the terminator and the drawing boy. The final step in the spiritual battle will be taken not in the future, but now. Today in the night. The linearity of time has disappeared. Only the dim light of the lamp remains… . And butterflies of memories are circling around… Andrey Kartashov graduated from the A. The impending global catastrophe, is there the possibility of salvation from it? An infinite number of fate crossroads and reality tunnels... An accident sometimes puts us in the middle of these crossroads... The similarity of surnames, the coincidence of circumstances. An incendiary melody sounds in the headphones. But the chain on the door lock has already been broken and once again the unblinking pupil of the heavy gaze is focused as if it were the red dot of the laser sight. Life plays its latest rock and roll chords on the cassette player. There is neither past nor future the fight for which will take place tonight, here in the present. There is only the cozy joy of evening life and the unpretentious melody of life, whose momentary nature, conquering death, turns into eternity ... Andrey Kartashov graduated from the A. The idea of ??a person’s life path in the context of the biblical maxim: “for each will bear his own cross”, has been reinvented through the prism of mass media culture. The postmodernist appeal in an ironic key to eternal themes and timeless plots. Again, the main character is the on-screen symbol of the era. The picture is based on the iconic scene where this character is with a log on the shoulder, replaced by a cross symbolizing his three life stages – sports, cinematography and political career. The artwork is rumination on the sacred personalities of the era, serving as idols and at the same time conceptual shelters, like dwellings in the trunk of a baobab, erected even today by primitive tribes. Who are they – idols being saturated or bodhisattvas who out of mercy voluntarily stepped into a new circle of samsara? What is their life path – a monument to the glamor of the possible, a hymn to the exercised right to the claim-demand, or a heavy cross? Who is the Great Man bearing this cross and the Little Man huddling in its shadow? Andrey Kartashov graduated from the A. The aspiration of the post-industrial era to turn the life of a resident of the metropolis into a permanent feast became obvious. The relevance of the cost and high-quality human capital productivity are in the spotlight. With postmodernist humor, in an old Dutch still life, which in the 17th century was a symbol of burgher luxury, there is placed a golden statuette of Arnold Schwarzenegger in lieu of a golden goblet. The absolute demand gave birth to the absolute supply. Everything is a commodity. All inclusive. Perfection has been served elegantly to the table with the English-language menu. Andrey Kartashov graduated from the A. Each epoch leaves its myths and legends for subsequent generations ... Sometimes the turns of mythological history touch so closely that they shine through each other … The title of the picture forms a semantic parallel between the surname of the main character of the film Red Heat, the captain of the Soviet militia Ivan Danko, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the name of Danko, the main character of the legend from the cycle «Tales of the Old Woman Izirgil» (Maxim Gorky). The hero of the legend is the leader of those, having got lost in the darkness, who illuminated the way for desperate and faithless people with his own heart, ripped out from his body. The 90s, the time of the disintegration of the USSR and the fall of the Iron Curtain, was marked by a wave of mutual interest of East and West. The ecumenical militiaman embodied the patterns of cultural perception of those years which took on bizarre, almost fairy-tale forms (which was especially evident in the cinema). The time of the thaw between the two superpowers, captured in art, was rich in historical and mythological archetypes being sometimes soulful, sometimes pretentious, sometimes funny-stereotyped. The main part of the picture is occupied by the face of Captain Danko, who, with a deep compassionate look, peers into the horizon of a certain magical dimension; where the Statue of Liberty with a torch burning like a heart is adjacent to a five-story building decorated with a Hammer and Sickle; where the mythical birds Sirin and Alkonst sing some ancient sacred song and, Alyonushka illuminates the road near the carved terem with a T800 skull; where the Firebird flies into the thicket of fairy tales of the Russian forest, but, as it were, again through some semantic intersection with «Red Heat» against the background of the Statue of Liberty. And above it, in a thundercloud, a Skynet drone from the Terminator hovers. However, it all starts and ends with Danko’s gaze. The transcultural grief of the imperfection of the world and the determination of the hero from the good old Hollywood fairy tale fills the mystical space of the painting with meaning, and the contemplator’s soul with nostalgia for the bygone times of the transcontinental thaw and such multifaceted symbols of the victory of Good over Evil ...
