    An atmospheric watercolour painting "Sailing at Sunset" by Scottish post-impressionist artist Emily Murray Paterson RSW, SWA (1855-1934) connected with the Glasgow School and member of the Society of Woman Artists.

     
    ABOUT THE PAINTING:
     
    Title: Sailing at Sunset
     
    Signature: Signed Lower Right
     
    Medium: Watercolour heightened with white
     
    Condition: Excellent condition
     
    Frame: Substantial decorative gilt frame, under glass. Small loss to bottom left corner.
     
    Size: Frame 62cm x 75cm Image 44cm x 58cm
     

    ABOUT THE ARTIST:
     
    Scottish artist who studied at the Edinburgh School of Art as well as in Paris before moving to London in 1917. She traveled widely, including the battlefields of Ypres in Belgium and was a keen Alpine walker. Her favoured subjects were landscapes, maritime, architecture and botany. She was elected member of the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society, Scottish Artists Society and Society of Women Artists. She exhibited widely including the Royal Academy from 1909-1934 (17 paintings) - she also had a memorial exhibition held at Walker's Gallery, London in 1934. Her work can be found in many public galleries including Imperial War Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, Brighton Museum & art Gallery, Wolverhampton Art Gallery and the McLean Museum & Art Gallery.
