Early rare study of a steamer packet berthing at Dover (inscribed on verso) signed lower left William Calcott Knell (1830-1880) and clearly dated 1851. Lovely historic maritime picture.

Heavily influenced by his father, William mainly painted coastal scenes with boats. With great skill he managed to convey the changing ambiances of the day and render his impression of nature. Between the period 1848-1865 Knell exhibited his works at the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists and the British Institution.Knell's works can be found at museums and art galleries in Portsmouth, Southend, Swansea, Preston & Hull with 7 of his paintings in the National Collection.
