Large Mounted, Framed & Glazed Original Watercolour 'Morning Light, Corfu' 1986 by Elizabeth Scott-Moore (Brit. 1902-93)

Painter & illustrator, notable as a fluent watercolourist, Scott-Moore was born in Dartford, Kent as Edith Elizabeth Brier, the name she used as an illustrator of books published by Blackie, Nelson and OUP, following in the footsteps of her Mother, born Victoria Carruthers, an illustrator of children’s books.

She met John Scott-Moore whilst she was still a student, travelling daily by train between Dartford and London. He was a married man, 20 years her senior and they didn’t marry until 1937. When her Husband died only 10 years later, she reverted to painting, having trained under Edmund J Sullivan at Goldsmiths’ College School of Art in the 1920s and having also attended the Central School of Arts & Crafts.

She was encouraged by her Brother, Ronald Brier and her friendship with the then well-known artist Alfred Heyward. On their painting expeditions in the Thames Valley, Heyward and Ronald helped her to discover the luminosity, fullness of colour and expansive touch of her mature style. In 1957 she was chosen as one of Jack Beddington’s ‘Young Artists of Promise’ in the book of that title. She showed at the RA Summer Exhibitions from 1948 onward, also at the RP, RI, RWS & NEAC, as a member of each and the Paris Salon where, in 1962, her portrait of Heyward, won a Gold Medal. Her typical exhibition pieces in watercolour were predominantly landscapes inspired by her continental travels, such as the present work, which appeared at the NEAC 100th Anniversary Show in 1986.

She died in Virginia Water, Surrey.
