Rare medieval papal bulla - obverse depicts the faces of St Paul and St Peter within beaded borders and below the inscription SPA SPE (SPA = Sanctus Paulus, SPE = Sanctus Petrus), all of which are encased by a beaded border around the outside edge of the bulla. The reverse bears the legend "MAR / TINVS / PP •V•" within a beaded border. 'PP' is an abbreviation of Pastor Pastorum - meaning shepherd of shepherds. The style of lettering is distinctive, being more lombardic than other bullae, the U in Martinus is particularly rounded rather than a V.

    Pope Martin V: 1417 to 1431 AD.

Fine condition: a little damage to one of the faces. From a Norfolk collection.

    Diameter: 37.8 mms (1.5 ins).
    Weight: 52.05 grams

The bulla was so named because they were attached to Papal documents or Bulls. They were sent from the offices of the Pope in Rome and the seal signified that the document was issued with the Pope's authority.

He was elected by the Council of Constance, which was called to end the forty year schism in the Western church. He asserted papal supremacy throughout Europe, organising a crusade against the Hussites, restoring Rome and attempting to mediate between England and France during the Hundred Years War.
