antique 18th c engraving “gloriam sapientes possidebunt” after p battoni (1745)

This is a rare engraving on paper after “Pompeo Battoni”. It is the allegory depicting Victory, sitting on a cloud with two cupids supporting a portrait of pope Benedict XIV. Below there are four females allegorical figures all looking up and in the distance a view of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

The engraving has an inscription lettered below the image with production details: Pomp. Battoni inv. et del. – I. Frey inc. romae 1745 and title (from Proverbs C.3, V.35)The engraving is framed in an ebonised wooden frame with gadrooned gilt details.Condition Report: The engraving was acquired in a house clearance in Suffolk, England. The engraving was mounted in a different frame than the current one and the paper has some rust and a small hole damage on the right corner. On the left bottom corner there is a pencil mark showing a number. The paper has a small water mark towards the right bottom corner and shows overall signs of age. The gilt of the frame is slightly damaged. All of the above are a testimony of the age of this engraving.
