This clock is approximately 100 years old, was made in France, and retailed by the Alex Clark shop in Fenchurch Street, London. They were an interesting and quite large company, founded in 1891 and at their peak employed some 620 people. They made and sold all sorts of luxury goods, specializing in silver travelling sets. Please see some of their adverts below.
The clock is housed in a sweet little mahogany case in the form of a miniature longcase clock. The case has marquetry and parquetry inlays. These inlays were made using tiny pieces of coloured woods (the green one is harewood). The eight-day movement, as would be expected from these retailers, is superb, with a fully jewelled cylinder platform mounted safely to the back of the movement. The clock is marked 'Paris' to the backplate. The porcelain dial is most attractive with bold arabic numerals in black, and 15 minute markings picked out in red. The glass is convex. The retailer's signature has survived perfectly on the dial. Time is indicated with delicate little steel hands of spade and pointer form. Please check the height as this is larger than you might think.
This is a perfectly delightful little clock in lovely original condition.

We have been antique dealers since 1974 and specialize in antique clocks, especially longcases, but also bracket, carriage and wall clocks. For many years we sourced clocks for a world-renowned clock specialist and author of books about clocks, who has now retired. We carry out restoration on pre-1860 clocks. We are also the largest dealers in 19th century stereoscopic photography in the world. We are a family business and are fortunate in having three generations working - aged from 22 to 75!
