This clock is illustrated on page 250 of Mystery, Novelty and Fantasy Clocks by Derek Roberts. We were buyers at auction for Derek for over 30 years and supplied several of the clocks in this book, including the boy wizard clock illustrated on the back of the dustcover (rest in peace John Luffman of the Curiosity Shop in Ludlow who found this clock in a farmhouse in the Welsh hills). We therefore know what we are talking about and, since the sad death of Derek, we are probably the most knowledgeable dealers in Guilmet clocks left.

A word of warning. There are some 20 so-called Guilmet clocks on Ebay. Most are Chinese or Indian fakes advertised from the US - some with asking prices of $20,000 or more. The fakers are especially churning out the windmill, train, steam hammer and other largely brass clocks. There is one 'Guilmet' motor car on Ebay. There are only four known Guilmet motor cars in the world. One is in the clock museum in Beijing. One was mentioned in a reference book many years ago and its whereabouts are currently not known, one in is private hands and has extensive restoration. The fourth appeared in a US auction a few years ago with a $1,000 estimate. We bought it for $34,000, shipped it to the UK, and sold it to Derek who restored it and promptly sold it. Unfortunately it arrived too late to feature in his book. The purpose of this ramble is to warn you to be extremely cautious when buying mystery clocks purporting to be by Guilmet.

This clock is totally original. It is 19th century and is by Guilmet. We are happy to give a written guarantee to that effect. Our clock business was established in 1974 and we have 50 years of experience with rare clocks.

The clock has not been restored and is in excellent untouched condition. There is a minor crack in the back of the pendulum glass which could be changed. It is almost invisible except close up and I much prefer to see the original glass. Please don't miss the video link to see the clock running.

However, unlike many Guilmet clocks, it works very, very well and keeps good time. Guilmet was a brilliant inventor but timekeeping and reliability of his clocks were not his strong points!

The clock is very heavy and not something we would trust to ordinary carriers. We have a specialist antiques carrier who would deliver anywhere in the UK for around £120. We can deliver free within 50 miles of Ipswich or the clock could be collected. It could be packed and shipped out of the UK by specialist antiques shippers.
