Jacques Stella forms at Lyon before from 1616-1621 for the court of Cosimo II de Medici in Florence where he worked with Jacques Callot. The influence of Florentine art is felt throughout his work. On the death of Cosimo de 'Medici in 1621, Stella went to Rome where he remained ten years and acquired fame through paintings and small prints, as well as works painted on stones (onyx, lapis lazuli or simply slate). It works especially for Pope Urban VIII. In Rome, he was influenced by classicism and more particularly the art of Nicolas Poussin, becoming intimate. He returned Lyon in 1634 and then went to Paris a year later. Cardinal Richelieu introduced him to Louis XIII, who appoints the painter to the king, giving him a pension of 1,000 pounds. It then housed in the Louvre. It addresses several times the theme of Christ's childhood with her by her parents found Jesus in the temple that exists in five different versions ... This biblical subject is the episode where the Flight into Egypt, the Holy Family made a stop and as you have noticed the landscape is not Egyptian! The European painters who had never traveled far, painted this scene in their everyday environment.
This picture is painted on a wooden panel (oak) prepared, note the brand Pannelier MB (Melchior de Bout). The wood panel is in very good condition, some small old restorations.
