An absolutely superb eight-day white dial mahogany cased longcase clock by Dallaway of Edinburgh, circa 1795. William and Henry Dallaway are well recorded in Clockmakers and Watchmakers of Scotland, as working in Edinburgh in the late 18th century. They seem to have brought the art of dial japanning to Scotland and most Scottish dials made in Scotland originated from the Dallaway workshops. This is a particularly superb example - probably because they made it to retail themselves.
The case is made from very fine figured mahogany. The 12-inch wide dial ensures that the proportions of the case are particularly slim. The base is of beautifully marked mahogany with boxwood stringing. The trunk is dominated by a long elegant door with an attractively shaped top - again with superb figuring to the timber and also strung in boxwood with, to each side, reeded quarter columns. The hood has free-stanging reeded pillars with brass capitals top and bottom. To the very top is a swan-neck pediment with little boxwood sound frets to allow the sound of the bell to escape. The fret is typical for an Edinburgh clock and is a sought-after feature.
The dial is very well painted with floral medallions in the corner spandrels; to the arch there are flowers each side of a basket of peaches - with a rather hungry looking bird eyeing them up! Bold roman numerals depict the hours with 15 minute markings in arabic numerals. Two subsidiary dials show the seconds and date. All four hands are fine cut from steel - an early feature. The hour and minute hands are of diamond form and the seconds hand is counterbalanced. The little date hand has, rather nicely, a heart incorporated within it.
The movement is well made and will run a little over a week on one wind. It strikes the hours on a bell. The original Scottish oval weights are fitted and the pendulum, unusually, is a wood rod - only employed on better quality clocks and rare on painted dials. The movement has been fully dismantled, cleaned, bushed where necessary, reassembled and tested.
All in all, a very fine clock in lovely original condition.
